POSITION TITLE

Community Environmental Outreach Educator/Coordinator (Full time (37.5 hours/week) – AmeriCorps VISTA Member)

ABOUT ZERO WASTE DETROIT

Zero Waste Detroit (ZWD) is a coalition of over 20 community, environmental, and environmental justice organizations. ZWD coalition came together in 2007 with the goal of closing Detroit’s incinerator, which was the world’s largest trash-to-energy incinerator in the world. Our evolving vision/goal is to move the City of Detroit to a solid waste management system that prioritizes recycling and materials recovery and away from waste incineration and landfilling.

Zero Waste Detroit serves the Detroit community by reaching and engaging stakeholders by raising awareness through comprehensive education and encouraging and promoting behavior change through rigorous study and research. ZWD’ goals include increasing community knowledge as it relates to the environment and climate change. Increasing community knowledge to achieve buy in for changes that can begin on the community level to achieve “culture change” in relation to waste management and building advocacy for climate change.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The ideal candidate for this position is a person who is flexible, likes to work with groups of diverse people, and is energetic and organized. This position is somewhat nontraditional, as a grassroots nonprofit most of ZWD work is with partners, Detroit residents and Universities. Technology is a must, the ability to take charge of Facebook, and other media’. Leadership skills for co-facilitation of various projects with the University of Michigan. Ability to schedule and facilitate community education sessions, town halls, talks other engagement methods (In-person and Virtual). Ability to build relationships with coalition members organizations and build coalition membership.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and implement innovative methods for the delivery of educational content
  • Develop and strengthen outreach strategies to engage stakeholders and build community awareness regarding environmental impacts
  • Assist in the enhancement of ZWD’s social media presence by creating and sharing applicable content
  • Assist in the development of systems to recruit, engage, and manage volunteers
  • Collaborate with ZWD coalition members and partners to help strengthen organizational capacity
  • Identify and establish partnerships with local, regional, and national organizations
  • Advocate for community behavior change through targeted campaigns and initiatives
  • Monitor and track the impact of educational programs and other initiatives on community environmental behaviors
  • Exemplify the mission and goals of Zero Waste Detroit

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree or educational focus in Environmental Sciences, Education, or other related fields with an understanding of sustainability and environmental issues
  • Proven experience in community education, engagement and outreach
  • A collaborative person with demonstrated expertise in relationship-building
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Passion for education and awareness of environmental issues and community
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft, Google, Canva, and other web-based software
  • City of Detroit resident preferred

This is an AmeriCorps VISTA term of service and a commitment that demands initiative, flexibility, and determination to assist in building capacity for the success of Zero Waste Detroit. This experience will be one of community exposure.
