Community Education Intern
Location: Hybrid (Detroit-based)
Duration: 10 weeks | 40 hours per week | May 18th - July 24th

Position Overview
The Community Education Intern will support Zero Waste Detroit’s mission to reduce waste and promote sustainable practices through community education. This intern will help facilitate workshops and community classes focused on topics such as zero waste living, composting, recycling, and waste reduction. They will also play an important role in collecting and analyzing participant feedback to help improve and expand Zero Waste Detroit’s educational programming.
This position is ideal for someone interested in community education, environmental sustainability, program facilitation, and nonprofit program evaluation.
Responsibilities

Assist with planning and facilitating community workshops and educational classes on zero waste topics

Support workshop logistics including materials preparation, participant sign-in, and setup/cleanup

Engage community members during events and support inclusive, welcoming learning spaces

Collect and organize participant feedback through surveys, interviews, and evaluation forms

Track workshop attendance and engagement data

Analyze feedback and summarize findings to help improve future programs

Assist with developing evaluation tools and simple reporting systems

Support outreach efforts to recruit participants for classes

Attend weekly team meetings and contribute ideas for improving educational programming

Outreach and Communications Intern

The Outreach and Communications Intern will help expand Zero Waste Detroit’s educational resources and digital presence. This intern will focus on researching and creating accessible materials that help Detroit residents reduce waste in their everyday lives, while also supporting social media and digital communications that share these resources with the community.
This position is ideal for someone interested in environmental communication, content creation, sustainability education, and nonprofit communications.
Responsibilities

Research best practices and local solutions for zero waste living

Develop educational resources such as guides, toolkits, tip sheets, and workshop materials

Help create digital content for social media, newsletters, and the website

Assist with drafting posts highlighting zero waste tips, community events, and organizational updates

Support organization of digital resources so they are accessible to the community

Help document workshops and programs through photos or summaries

Assist with updating the organization’s resource library and educational materials

Track digital engagement metrics and help identify ways to improve outreach
